Where the salt story will be told

The Lion Salt Works

Within Northwich, Cheshire West and Chester Council has two museum facilities - the Weaver Hall Museum & Workhouse and the Lion Salt Works in nearby Marston.

On June 1st 2010, the old Salt Museum was relaunched as Weaver Hall Museum & Workhouse thus allowing the Lion Salt Works to develop as the main salt-related visitor attraction for the area.

The Lion Salt Works was the last working open pan salt works in Cheshire.

It was built, owned and operated by the Thompson family throughout its operational life.

When it closed in 1986, the works were bought by the former Vale Royal Borough Council to ensure their preservation.

The Lion Salt Works Trust was formed in 1993 to work with the Council and other bodies to restore this important and unique site, now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

It is currently enjoying an £8 million restoration scheme to create an innovative state-of-the-art visitor centre celebrating the rich industrial heritage of the salt industry in Cheshire.

Because of the restoration works, the Lion Salts Works is currently closed to the public other than on special open days or by special arrangement.
