Exhibition: The Legacy of Childhood Games
28th September 2012 - 27th January 2013

Exhibition : The Legacy of Childhood Games

Relive your childhood in this nostalgic display exploring the street games, toy crazes and fairs of the past.

Playing games offers children the opportunity to learn the lessons for life: about rules and integrity;  practical and physical skills; winning, losing and strategy: focus and social skills.

Many modern games date back thousands of years and follow the same principles of chance, strategy or physical dexterity.  Some games require nothing more than a willing group of participants with time on their hands.  In these games the fun is usually in the creation: the rules, the use of the built and natural environment, the equipment required to play the game.  Other games require specialist equipment which can take on more importance than the game itself, achieving ‘iconic’ status.  To own the ‘must-have’ game of the year bestows kudos on the owner and a sense of exclusion for those who do not.

Remembering childhood games is always a great way to get the generations talking and spark debate!  During the development of this exhibition collaborative work was undertaken with a school, community groups and a residential care home to gather memories, music and images.

Entrance to the exhibition is free. There is a small charge when visiting the other galleries at the Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse.
