Mrs Carey said, on opening the exhibition:

“We should all be very proud of our Cheshire heritage and landscapes as it makes our county a very unique place to love and cherish.

This exhibition brings together our striking and beautiful landscape with the history and heritage of how and why our Castles and Forts of Cheshire were built.

County wide the exhibition looks at engravings of Beeston, Frodsham and Halton Castles and you can see the original architect’s model of Chester Castle along with his designs.

Of specific local interest is the cavalry helmet found at Castle, Northwich when excavations took place 40 years ago. It is amazing to think it dates back to 100AD and whilst several Roman parade helmets have been found around the country, we have the only standard issue cavalry helmet in the UK at this museum.

You will also be interested to learn that Castle in Northwich was not a castle but a wooden fort built in Roman times half way between Manchester and Chester. Castle was a halfway house for the Roman soldiers.

This exhibition tells us a lot about our past and I am sure will excite a lot of people to go out and explore our castles and hillforts in Cheshire.”

The exhibition, which is free, is open Tuesday to Saturday and also on Mondays in school holidays.

There is a small charge when visiting the other galleries in the Museum.
